Getting our Web 2.0 in gear...

Have you ever been at your computer wondering "Did they post a new blog at SmithPad.com today? Should I bother navigating over to their little family site?"

This new feature will tell you when we've updated our Blog or posted new Notes or Links. A notice will appear in your RSS news reader and you can preview what has been added before clicking over to our site.

What is a news feed and why should I care about it?

A news feed (also known as an RSS feed) is a listing of a Web site's news-type content. It is updated whenever new content is published on the site. News readers "subscribe" to news feeds, which means they download lists of "articles" at an interval that you specify (every 30 minutes, for example), and present them to you in a condensed format in your news reader. Ta da!!

Just set up your news reader, sit back at your computer and updates appear automatically as long as you are connected to the internet. Each news feed will have a link back to the Web site it came from, so if you see a headline / excerpt / story you like, you just click on a link to visit the Web site to read it. It streamlines your internet browsing so that you skip over endless ads, pop-ups and other annoying distractions along the way.

What is a news reader and how do I get one?

First, you need to sign up for or download a news reader. We prefer Google Reader (it's free), but there are many other free ones available online, even within some favorite Web browsers such as Firefox.

How do I subscribe to my favorite news feeds?

Type or cut-and-paste the address below into your news reader to subscribe to the SmithPad.com feed:

RSS http://www.smithpad.com/rss.asp

Once you're all set up and reading the news, you can add all kinds of other cool feeds to your news reader. We like some of these:
Fark.com: http://feeds.feedburner.com/fark/HifS
Gizmodo: http://www.gizmodo.com/index.xml
Woot.com: http://www.woot.com/blog/rss.aspx
What on Earth does RSS mean?

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" -- it's a format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Web, including newspapers, magazines, and blogs.
