Wedding

"For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate."
Mark 6:7-9

'Marry me?' Bill proposed on February 17th, 2006 after taking me out to enjoy our favorite Irish pub with some good friends. It happened to be a special event at the pub that night, The Great Guinness Toast, where they have music and serve everyone a pint of Guinness so that we can all raise a glass at 9 PM with thousands of other partiers around the world. There was a clock counting down the time and at the big moment, when the band offered up their toast, they also called out to me to ask what my answer was to "Bill's question??" I was caught up in the moment, embarrassed to be singled out in this crowd, so I didn't see Bill kneeling down beside me and pulling out a jewelry box!

There was no need to wait through a long engagement. We knew what we wanted and a summer wedding sounded best. All we had to do was pick a date. July 1st had several benefits: it was a Saturday, many guests could travel thanks to the 4th of July holiday making a long weekend, it was the earliest part of hurricane season so our favorite resort would be available for our honeymoon and it was not too close to the anniversary of my father's death or my sister's August wedding last summer. Phew. Picking a date turned out to be one of the easier choices.

La Jolla Cove It all fell into place- almost too easily! Found a dress in one trip to one store, thanks to Caroline who dragged me out of the house to shop right away. Shoes were easy thanks to Bill's insistence that cute sneakers win out over heels. Earrings were a very special gift from a family member. Flowers took one consultation to select. The balloons and additional décor were just as easy. The photographer was great. We had a chance to work with her taking some engagement photos (we had to have the beach included in our wedding somehow!) and our budget was satisfied.

Our Cake

There were some more challenging decisions: invitations, bow ties, gift registry, website construction and cake. I assured Bill that tasting cake was the fun part of planning a wedding, dragged him out to the bakery and he made the final selection. He did a nice job! Having just one attendant each made the tuxes and bridesmaid gown super easy. The reception hall was available and took less than a week to secure.

The church We did struggle with locating a church for the ceremony. We are very attached to the San Diego area and wanted to get married close to home. Bill's father is the pastor at a church 85 miles north of us. How could we get the pastor we wanted at a church closer to home?? We wanted just the right little traditional-looking church and we wanted to bring along our own pastor. The etiquette books don't address THAT particular situation. After some careful searching, we found the answer right up the hill. There is a charming Evangelical Lutheran Church and Day School practically around the corner and their pastor and Elders agreed to host our wedding! So Beautiful Saviour provided the church, we brought along the pastor/father-in-law, there was no stopping us now!
